Chris Johanson

B. 1968 San Jose, California

Lives and works in Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California

California-native Chris Johanson is a key member of San Francisco’s Mission School. Johanson engages with the meditative qualities of art-making and sincere direct communication through painting and sculpture.

For Converge 45, Chris Johanson has created a public art sculpture outside of PNCA and a painting installation within the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture. Both of the projects are contending with the meaning of freedom in the current social landscape. The artist also commissioned a musical collaboration between Holland Andrews (Like a Villain) and Brian Mumford (Dragging an Ox through Water) in response to his exterior sculpture, which was performed at the venue’s artist reception August 10 at 6:30pm. Johanson is represented by Mitchell Innes & Nash, New York; Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen; Altman Siegel, San Francisco; The Modern Institute, Glasgow and Albert Baronian, Brussels.
