One Day Only: Portlanders Gather to Witness a Rare Object and Rebuild a Missing Archive

  • Pioneer Place, Lower Level 700 Southwest 5th Avenue Portland, OR, 97204 United States (map)

On Saturday, February 28, 2026, Portlanders are invited to Pioneer Place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a unique public viewing of shoes worn by Diana, Princess of Wales. Hosted by Converge 45, artist Rose Salane, and The Cooley Gallery, this one-day event serves as a participatory act of civic remembrance designed to reconstruct a lost piece of city history. Following her death in 1997, thousands of residents gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square to sign a public condolence book that was later misplaced, a moment captured in local news archives.

In 1997, a public condolence book signed by thousands of residents at Pioneer Courthouse Square went missing; this project aims to rebuild that archive by inviting visitors to contribute written reflections to a newly commissioned album. By viewing these intimate historical objects in a public setting, the community can explore themes of nostalgia, loss, and the preservation of collective memory.

Location: Pioneer Place, Lower Level (700 SW 5th Ave.)

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
